Welcome to the ultimate guide for every Minecraft miner. Finding valuable ores is the key to progress, but with the massive world changes from the "Caves & Cliffs" update, the old rules no longer apply. The world is deeper, the caves are bigger, and ores are spread out in new and interesting ways.
Forget everything you thought you knew about Y-levels. This 2026 guide provides the most up-to-date information on where to find every important ore, from common coal to the legendary diamond. Let's get digging!
A Note on Ore Distribution
Ores now have a "triangular" distribution. This means they are most common at a specific "peak" Y-level and become rarer as you move away from it. Our guide focuses on these peak levels for maximum efficiency.
The Big One: Diamonds (Y = -58)
Let's start with what everyone wants. Diamonds are most abundant between Y=-50 and Y=-64. The absolute sweet spot for finding them is Y = -58. At this level, you're deep enough to find the highest concentrations while staying just above the lava lakes that often fill the bottom of the world at Y=-64.
The Ultimate Ore-Finding Guide
Here is the definitive breakdown for every other major ore in the Overworld and the Nether.
Diamond
Optimal Mining Level
Sweet Spot
Y = -58
Full Range: Y=16 to Y=-64
Pro Tip: Use strip mining at Y=-58. The deeper you go, the less exposure to air, meaning more diamonds and fewer interruptions from caves.
Iron
Optimal Mining Level
Sweet Spot
Y = 16
Full Range: Y=72 to Y=-64
Pro Tip: Large iron veins are common in mountainsides around Y=232, but for general caving, Y=16 is the most consistent and reliable level.
Gold
Optimal Mining Level
Sweet Spot
Y = -16
Full Range: Y=32 to Y=-64
Pro Tip: Gold is most common in Badlands biomes, where it can generate at any height. Outside of Badlands, head deep underground to Y=-16.
Lapis Lazuli
Optimal Mining Level
Sweet Spot
Y = 0
Full Range: Y=64 to Y=-64
Pro Tip: Unlike other ores, Lapis doesn't have a triangular distribution. It's evenly spread out, but a shallow strip mine at Y=0 is a quick and easy way to find it.
Coal
Optimal Mining Level
Sweet Spot
Y = 96
Full Range: Y=256 to Y=0
Pro Tip: Coal is incredibly common and easy to find. Look for it exposed on the sides of mountains and cliffs around Y=96 for easy surface-level collection.
Emerald
Optimal Mining Level
Sweet Spot
Y = 232
Full Range: Y=256 to Y=-16
Pro Tip: Emeralds are tricky. They only spawn in Mountain biomes and are extremely rare, usually found in single-block veins. Your best bet is trading with villagers.
Copper
Optimal Mining Level
Sweet Spot
Y = 48
Full Range: Y=112 to Y=-16
Pro Tip: Copper is very common, especially in Dripstone Caves biomes. Mining around Y=48 will yield massive quantities.
Netherite
Optimal Mining Level
Sweet Spot
Y = 15 (in Nether)
Full Range: Y=119 to Y=8
Pro Tip: Look for Ancient Debris in the Nether. It never generates exposed to air, so strip mining at Y=15 is the most effective method. Bring beds to clear large areas quickly!
Efficient Mining Strategies
Now that you know where to dig, let's talk about how to dig.
- Strip Mining: The classic method. Dig down to your target Y-level, create a main tunnel (2 blocks high, 1 block wide), and then dig straight branches off it every 2-3 blocks. This exposes the maximum number of blocks for the least amount of digging. Perfect for finding diamonds.
- Cave Exploration: Exploring the new massive cave systems is the best way to find ores that are common when exposed to air, like Iron and Copper. You'll cover more ground and find huge, exposed veins.
- Bed Mining (Nether): In the Nether, beds explode when you try to sleep in them. This is the most effective way to clear out large areas of Netherrack to search for Ancient Debris. Just make sure to stand back!
Quick Reference Chart
Ore | Best Y-Level | Biome Tip |
---|---|---|
Diamond | -58 | Deep Dark |
Iron | 16 / 232 | Mountains |
Gold | -16 | Badlands |
Netherite | 15 (Nether) | Any Nether Biome |
