How to Install Mods & Add-Ons in Minecraft APK (Step-by-Step Guide)

One of the best parts of Minecraft is making it your own. If you’re using the Minecraft APK (the Bedrock Edition), you can transform your worlds by installing "Add-Ons." Many players search for "mods," but for the APK version, Add-Ons are the key to unlocking new creatures, furniture, blocks, and gameplay features.

This guide will show you exactly how to install Add-Ons in your Minecraft APK. It's easier than you think! Before we start, it's helpful to understand the key differences in our Mods vs. Add-Ons guide.

The Golden Rule: Safety First!

Before you download anything, remember this: only download Add-Ons from trusted sources. The official Minecraft Marketplace is the safest bet, but reputable community sites like MCPEDL are also popular. Every file on our hub is verified, but if you venture elsewhere, be cautious. For a full safety checklist, review our guide on how to safely install Minecraft APKs.

Understanding the File Types: McPack vs. Zip

Add-Ons typically come in two formats, and the installation method depends on which one you have:

  • .mcpack / .mcaddon: This is the easy, one-tap install format. Minecraft handles everything for you.
  • .zip: This format requires you to manually copy the files into the correct Minecraft folder. It's a bit more hands-on but still very simple.

Method 1: The One-Tap Install (.mcpack & .mcaddon)

This is the simplest way to get started. If your downloaded Add-On ends in .mcpack or .mcaddon, follow these steps.

Step 1: After downloading the file, open your Android File Manager and navigate to your "Downloads" folder.

Step 2: Tap on the .mcpack or .mcaddon file. Your device will ask which app to use; select "Minecraft."

Step 3: Minecraft will launch automatically and you'll see a "Import Started" message at the top of the screen. Wait for it to say "Successfully imported."

Method 2: The Manual Install (.zip)

If your Add-On is a .zip file, you’ll need to do a little digital unpacking. It’s like putting together a simple LEGO set.

Step 1: Unzip the File. In your File Manager, tap and hold the .zip file and select "Extract" or "Unzip." This will create a new folder with the same name.

Step 2: Move the Folder. Open the newly created folder. You are looking for a folder that contains the Add-On's content (often called the "Behavior Pack" or "Resource Pack"). Copy this folder.

Step 3: Find the Minecraft Directory. Navigate to this path in your file manager: Internal Storage > Android > data > com.mojang.minecraftpe > files > games > com.mojang.

Step 4: Paste it In. Inside this folder, you will see two important sub-folders: behavior_packs and resource_packs. Paste your copied folder into the correct one. If it's a texture or sound pack, use `resource_packs`. If it changes mob behavior or adds new items, use `behavior_packs`.

Activating the Add-On In Your World

Once an Add-On is imported, it’s not active yet. You have to enable it for each world you want to use it in.

  1. From the main menu, click Play and find the world you want to edit. Click the pencil icon next to it.
  2. In the World Settings menu on the left, scroll down to "Add-Ons."
  3. Select "Resource Packs" or "Behavior Packs."
  4. Find your newly installed Add-On in the "My Packs" tab, select it, and click "Activate." It will now appear in the "Active" tab.
  5. That's it! Launch your world and enjoy the new content. If you run into problems, check our troubleshooting guide.

Don't Forget to Back Up!

Before activating lots of Add-Ons, it's a wise idea to make a copy of your world. In the World Settings, scroll to the bottom and click "Copy World." This gives you a safe backup in case an Add-On causes any unexpected issues.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use multiple Add-Ons at once?

Yes! You can activate multiple Resource Packs and Behavior Packs at the same time. However, be aware that some Add-Ons may conflict if they try to modify the same game elements. If your game crashes, try disabling them one by one to find the conflict.

Why isn't my Add-On showing up in the game?

If you manually installed a .zip file, you likely placed the folder in the wrong directory or didn't extract it correctly. Double-check that the behavior/resource pack folder is inside the correct `com.mojang` subfolder. For .mcpack files, the import might have failed; try downloading and tapping the file again.

Do Add-Ons work in multiplayer?

Yes, but with a condition. If you are hosting the world, anyone who joins will automatically be prompted to download the required Add-Ons. This makes for a seamless multiplayer experience. However, you can't join a server that doesn't have the same Add-Ons enabled.

How do I uninstall an Add-On?

First, deactivate the Add-On from any worlds using it. Then, to fully delete it, go to Settings > Storage from the main menu. You'll see lists for Resource Packs and Behavior Packs. Find the Add-On you want to remove and click the trash can icon to delete it from your device.
